We are looking for a volunteer who can develop an employee handbook or make updates to our existing materials. We're hoping to find a partner with a background in HR and/or operations to improve transparency and accountability by clarifying our employees’ legal rights and our policies, benefits, and other expectations for performance and conduct in a new or revised employee handbook. The handbook will cover policies that cover both our UK and US staff members. This project will contain the following activities:

-Conducting an audit of our existing policies including reviewing our existing materials and asking any clarifying questions
-Reviewing policies from our Fiscal Sponsor to determine which policies need to be added
-Identify policies that we should modify and any new policies or areas that should be addressed and included
-Present a detailed outline of a new handbook
-Finalize the handbook after receiving feedback from our team

By volunteering on this project, you will help our organization fulfill its mission by keeping team members informed about the internal policies that guide our work and operations. Our team members, including our Executive leadership team, will assist with gathering information. We are hoping to roll out the handbook at our team retreat in the Fall of 2025.

To prepare, we've designated our COO-US to oversee the project. Team members include the COO-UK, and our Operations Associate. We'll provide you with our existing Employee Handbook and policies, and the handbook from our Fiscal sponsor, internal communications regarding employment policies, and any other employment policies that we have in place. The volunteer should expect to spend 15-20 hours over 6 weeks.

The Responsible Business Initiative for Justice (RBIJ) works with companies to champion fairness, equality, and effectiveness across systems of punishment and incarceration. RBIJ grew out of a diverse collaboration: lawyers who had witnessed destructive cycles of incarceration first hand, businesses committed to seeing change within their communities, and government leaders working to secure human rights for all. Out of their collective insights, experiences and frustrations, a common vision formed that became our central mission - to build an effective criminal justice system that increases safety, deters violence and is above all fair. Every human, regardless of their circumstances, is entitled to respect, equality, fairness and dignity before the law. This universally accepted norm is enshrined in statutes, regulations, international treaties and agreements. And yet so often systems of justice fail to deliver on this promise and in reality discriminate, over-criminalize, and trap the world’s most vulnerable people in destructive cycles of punishment. This has to change.
